PLA and FDM 3D Printing: How Our Games and Gifts Are Made

Most of the games, photo frames, dice towers and gifts in our shop are made with FDM printing in PLA. Here is a simple guide to what that means, why we use it, and how to look after your print once it arrives. Everything is 3D printed to order in the UK.

What is FDM printing?

FDM stands for fused deposition modelling. The printer feeds a spool of plastic filament through a heated nozzle, melts it, and lays it down one thin layer at a time. Each layer bonds to the one below until the whole object is built up from the bottom. It is the most common type of 3D printing, and it is ideal for strong, practical items like boxes, frames, game boards and holders.

What is PLA?

PLA (polylactic acid) is a plastic made from plant-based sources such as corn starch or sugar cane. It is rigid, holds fine shapes well, comes in a wide range of colours, and prints cleanly without strong fumes. That makes it a great fit for decorative and everyday items.

Why we use PLA

  • Clean, crisp shapes: PLA keeps sharp edges and detail, so games and frames look neat.
  • Strong and rigid: it is sturdy enough for everyday handling, game nights and travel.
  • Lots of colours: we can print in a wide choice of colours and finishes.
  • Plant-based: it is made from renewable sources rather than oil.

What to expect from an FDM print

Because FDM builds objects layer by layer, you may see fine horizontal lines on the surface. These layer lines are a normal part of the process and part of the handmade character of each piece. We tune our settings to keep them as fine as possible on visible surfaces.

Looking after your PLA print

  • Keep it away from heat: PLA can soften at fairly low temperatures, so do not leave it in a hot car, on a radiator or in direct summer sun behind glass.
  • Clean gently: wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid the dishwasher and very hot water.
  • Not for food: our prints are decorative and functional, but not food safe.

Things we print in PLA

Our miniatures and busts are made differently, in resin, for much finer detail. You can read about that in our guide to resin 3D printing.
